Kharkhorin, once known as Karakorum, stood as the capital of Chinggis Khaan’s Great Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Founded in 1220 by Chinggis Khaan, it became the epicenter of a vast and flourishing empire. However, with the shift of the Mongolian capital to Beijing by Khublai Khaan and the subsequent fall of the empire, Karakorum was abandoned and later razed by Chinese forces in 1388. Our journey to Kharkhorin begins with a visit to the Kharkhorin Museum, where artifacts from the era of the Great Mongolian Empire are on display. Following this cultural immersion, we explore Erdene Zuu, Mongolia's oldest and largest monastery, dating back to 1585. Constructed using remnants of Chinggis Khaan's capital, Erdene Zuu bears witness to Mongolian history. Though partially dismantled by the Soviet government in the 1930s, the monastery has since been restored and now serves as both a spiritual haven and a museum.
