Day 3 - Gorkhi-Terelj national park and first day of Tsagaan Sar
Today marks the pinnacle of the Tsagaan Sar celebration, offering a profound insight into the enduring traditions and boundless hospitality of Mongolia. The morning of Tsagaan Sar commences with a ceremonial act steeped in ancient Mongolian customs. The hostess initiates the day by presenting the first cup of tea with milk to the gods, symbolically casting its contents in all directions. Subsequently, the family gathers outside their home to engage in ritual prayers, which are often published in newspapers and determined by the Chinese zodiac. The ensuing custom, known as Zolgokh, unfolds as guests approach the household one by one. Wearing a Khadag, a ceremonial blue silk scarf, guests extend their forearms to intertwine with those of the host, uttering the phrase "Amar baina uu, Sar shindee saikhan shinelj baina uu," conveying well wishes for peace and a joyous Lunar New Year celebration. This exchange holds immense significance, as Mongolians believe that the nature of this first day influences the course of the entire year. To invoke good fortune for the year ahead, Mongolians observe the religious ritual known as "Khiimorio sergeex" during Tsagaan Sar. Additionally, the festivities include the performance of the ovoo ritual, where Mongolians express gratitude to the gods and nature. These sacred practices encapsulate the spiritual depth and reverence woven into the fabric of Tsagaan Sar, underscoring its importance in shaping the destiny of the coming year.
